Jorma Paavonen (68) is Professor (Emeritus) of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Helsinki and at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University Hospital, Helsinki, Finland. This Department is the largest Ob/Gyn Department in Finland, with approximately 15,000 deliveries per year, almost 100 medical doctors in staff, including 33 resident positions. He graduated with his MD degree from the University of Helsinki in 1973 and received his board certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1979, and his PhD degree also in 1979 (Chlamydial infections of the female genital tract). Dr. Paavonen’s research programs focus on STDs, chlamydial infections and HPV infections in particular, prevention of preterm birth, HPV vaccination, LNG-IUS in the treatment of menorrhagia, vulvar pain syndrome, abnormal placentation, and others. Major activities include undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and clinical work, both as an obstetrician and as a consultant gynaecologist. He is currently the Principal Investigator of the Women’s Health research programs. Since 1978, Dr. Paavonen has authored approximately 500 scientific articles published in peer reviewed journals (H-Index 60). His most recent major publications are on HPV vaccination, Chlamydia-associated infertility, preterm delivery biomarkers, management of postpartum hemorrhage, vestibulectomy in the treatment of severe dyspareunia, cost-effectiveness of LNG-IUS in the treatment of menorrhagia and disease burden of abnormal placentation.  For instance, during the last 3 years (2012-2014) he has authored 46 publications (with an impact factor total of 192.6). He is the Principal Investigator of the global Phase III and Phase IV HPV vaccination efficacy trials. He has supervised >20 MD PhD programs, and several programs are ongoing. He is or has been the Associate Editor or Editorial Board Member of Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Sexually Transmitted Infections, Infectious Diseases of in Obstetrics and Gynecology, International Journal of STD & AIDS, and Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica (AOGS).  Dr. Paavonen’s ultimate goal is to act as a role model for the next generation as a clinical scientist with high performance teaching, clinical research, and bedside clinical service.
