Paula trained at both Cambridge and Oxford Universities and has been a consultant haematologist at the sharp end (acute hospital practice) for 22 years, initially as a paediatric haematologist at Alder Hey Childrens’ Hospital in Liverpool and then as a consultant in adult haemostasis and thrombosis at Manchester Royal Infirmary. In 2011 she took up her current appointment as Medical Director of the UK national haemovigilance scheme, Serious Hazards of Transfusion (www.shotuk.org).
She has had a longstanding interest in both haemostasis and transfusion and has contributed to national British Committee for Standards in Haematology guidelines on paediatric transfusion and appropriate use of FFP and cryoprecipitate. She was lead author for guidelines on diagnosis and management of rare coagulation disorders published in Haemophilia in 2004 (this has remained in the top 10 most downloaded papers from this journal every year since then). Her main areas of research and interest have been in bleeding disorders (particularly factor XI deficiency which was the subject of her doctoral thesis, and immune thrombocytopenia) and she was a member of the World Federation of Hemophilia executive committee for 8 years (2004 to 2012, an international charity whose mission is to bring better management and treatment to people with bleeding disorders worldwide).  She was the chair of the rare bleeding disorders and von Willebrand disease committee. She has published more than 120 peer-reviewed papers and guidelines and is an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Manchester.
